    Suzy Nellies

    Suzy Nellies

Suzy goes from a sixteen year old North Highland College student to being a UKAEA plant engineer studying for an MBA in Engineering Management.

Suzy left school at sixteen and came to The North Highland College to study for an HNC and HND in Mechanical Engineering. She then decided to pursue her studies at a university down south but found she didn't enjoy the experience and came back to Caithness and secured a job at Dounreay. Suzy was still infected by the learning bug and whilst still working full time, she picked up her studies again at the college. Whilst degree work was obviously more challenging, she found the background experience which tutors brought to lectures particularly helpful as it provided further understanding to theory. During her studies, Suzy moved house three times, got married and had three children (twins plus one) – proof that juggling is not just a circus act! Suzy said, "I would most definitely recommend the course. Tutors were approachable, helpful, and provided me with the motivation I needed to complete my degree. Staff offer one-to-one tuition which is in contrast to the huge classes and informal environment found a some universities." Since completing her degree last year, Suzy has been appointed Mechanical Plant Engineer at UKAEA as well as continuing to manage the bulk gas plants on site. Suzy intends to carry on learning and has enrolled for an MBA in Engineering Management by distance learning through Bath and Loughborough universities.
