    Board Of Management

The North Highland College was founded in 1959 as Thurso Technical College. Over the years the college's curriculum, student complement, and geographic coverage has expanded significantly. Currently the college has nine academic sections, and enrols in excess of eight thousand students annually.

The board of management is collectively responsible for the governance of the college, determining its direction, and ensuring compliance with the statutes which regulate it within the further and higher education sectors. Membership of the board is on a purely voluntary basis, and limited to two four year terms of office. The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 do not apply.

The North Highland College is also an academic partner of the UHI Millennium Institute.

The board of management comprises of not less than ten, and not more than sixteen members who are appointed by the board. These members are appointed based on their experience and capacity in local industry, commerce, or employment matters, or because they have a genuine interest in the work of the college. The principal is a member of the board of management, along with two staff representatives, and one student representative.

There are four cycles of meetings in each college year between August and June, along with two board seminars or away days. Members also serve on at least one of the five committees of the board.

For further information regarding the North Highland College board of management please contact Margaret Rose, secretary to the board of management, by clicking here. Or for a list of current members click here.

He attended Napier College (now Napier University) on a day release basis for eight years, studying Chemistry before undertaking PhD research at the University of Edinburgh. On completion of his research degree Gordon joined Fife College as a lecturer, where he eventually became manager of the college’s science section. Following a brief spell at the SQA, he subsequently moved to Lauder College in Dunfermline, becoming the college’s quality manager.

Gordon is interested in improving all aspects of the learners' experience - particularly in reaching out to reluctant learners and finding ways of engaging with them to create an environment where they become enthusiastic about their own learning.

For Gordon, one of the most exciting things about coming to the North Highland College is the opportunity to work with learners on all levels of the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF), from students at level 1 to researchers at level 12.
